Our Story & Our Community

We are where we areβ€”and it's on purpose.

a bit of history

Lindsay and Pete were boyfriend and girlfriend in middle school. But after going their separate ways for 10 years of formal education, WWOOFing, and traveling, they eventually ran into each other again and merged their common passions. They called it Harvest Roots. After running a farm, buying a commercial kitchen and launching a business, they eventually bought a home together and started planting an orchard on their homestead. In 2016, they were married and everyone agrees this was probably the lowest-stress thing they've tackled together.

OUR community, friends & helpers

As Alabama natives, we remained dedicated to the state but wanted to live at a higher altitude. That left only one or two choices. Mentone is perched upon the southern tip of Lookout Mountain at about 1900 feet. The ecology and botany of the area is reminiscent of classic Appalachia. We fell in love with the altitude as well as the intact forests and pristine features of nearby Cloudland Canyon, Little River Canyon and Desoto Falls. As plant enthusiasts, this diversity and beauty fuels and inspires our business and ferments. It's also just a beautiful place to live. The town has its way of attracting nature-loving, open minded folks but also those who have lived here for multiple generations.
